Harmotion

Harmotion screenshot I want you to think of a side scrolling shooter like Gradius or R-type, now replace all the enemies with fancy looking blobs, and make boss fights into random encounters... sounds weird, right? But what if these 'boss fights' or random encounters... were all other players?

You just thought of Harmotion!

The moment you log into harmotion you are put into a single player game which involves you shooting at blob things called plasmoids, and shooting them results in them splitting and eventually disapearing, and releasing power particles, which you collect to enhance your weapon, as well as to win the level. Some plasmoids contain item boxes in them, and upon picking them up you are given a random powerup, altough the first one you pick up in every game gives you a radar. Once you activate the radar you become available for multiplayer, and the game starts searching for a player to match you up with, this may take a minute or two, so you will have plenty of time to get into the single player portion and forget about the radar until you get that 'random encounter'.

The main focus of the game is on these 1 on 1 duals. You are on the bottom of the screen and your opponent is on the top, the idea is to blast away at him and the plasmoids appearing from the sides, collect the power particles to enhance your weapon and make killing him easier. The players' ships have 2 hit points, so games can be very short, but thats the beauty of this game. A single play session may consist of many fights, assuming you win them all, because once you die that's it, game over, you have to start the single player from the beggining... this only really effects your streak, score (arcade score, not rank score) and the difficulty of the single player levels, but doesn't really effect the multiplay in any real way. Another thing to take note of is that at the start of every level and dual the ships are reset, meaning they have full health, lowest power weapon, and no powerup. The game's client isn't everything however, the website keeps track of all sorts of cool information, like player ranks based on their kills to deaths ratio, the highest scorers, the best killing spreas, and the highest levels reached, as well as a real time list of the most recent matches, showing who killed who.
