GTA2

GTA2 should be at least a term known by many gamers out there.
It so happens that Rockstar Games released it as Freeware for free download on their website.

GTA2 retained the top-down viewpoint of GTA, but added a choice of factions to the car-stealing/telephone-answering forumla of the original.
You answer certain payphones to go on missions for certain gangs.
Working for gang #1 will piss gang #2 off, working for gang #2 will piss gang #3 off, etc.

You can move freely around the city, stealing cars, killing pedestrians - but be careful! The more you screw around, the more trouble you will get:
The police, SWAT-teams FBI-Agents and even the Army can go after you if your Wanted-Level rises too much.

With "real" radio stations, interactive levels, gang fights, cool sounds, and so much more, you will see why GTA2 is a classic.

Soon gets a bit difficult
There is no minimap, which can be a bit annoying
