Battle for Wesnoth
Battle for Wesnoth is a rather amazing hex based strategy game. What sets it apart from most games of this type is the
multiple tactical aspects it has. These include; day/night, where lawful units are stronger during the day, and chaotic
units are stronger at night; Ranged/Melee Attack types, where a unit can choose how to attack another, and the other unit
is forced to retaliate using that weapon type, if he doesnt have it then he doesnt retaliate at all (for example a bowman attacking
a swordsman with his bow, the swordsman cant retaliate). There are also the common tactical aspects, like for example the floor increasing/decreasing the units defence, depending on the tile type.
Other cool features include the xp system, where a unit gains xp for every time he is in battle, and more for actual kills, when he
gains enough he can change class. each class has its own stats and weapons which may differ alot from the base unit.
There are actually many more features but it would just take too long to list them all... so i'll just skip to the gameplay now...
Each scenario pits you against an enemy team, possible more then one team, you may also have allies. Your hero is your most important.
unit, and if he dies its gameover. He can recruit units by standing on top of a "keep" tile then selecting the units he wants.
each unit you buy costs upkeep, and in order to sustain that upkeep you must capture towns, each town you capture supports a single unit, if you have more towns then units, then you get gold each turn. This is vital to the gameplay, as most of the time you will want to take over enemy towns to stop their gold supply, therefore making it so they lose money each turn in upkeep, and eventually cant afford more units.
Graphically the game is very good, they are nothing amazing, but they are still very nice to look at. The sounds are also pretty good
they suit the game well.. altough cuiriously, a bat screaming to death sounds an awful lot like a human...
Another feature i forgot to mention is the multiplay, the game includes online play which is obviously alot more fun then fighting AI.
Bottom Line: As far as tactical turn based strategy games go, you'll be hard pressed to find a better one then this. The tactical aspects prove superior even to most commercial TBS games, yet the game is very easy to pick and play, and any fans of the genre should download this instantly and consider themselves very lucky that the Wesnoth team released this game for free!
